Sustainable Farming Practices

At New Spring Farm, we do our best to live sustainably and in harmony with our natural surroundings. Part of this commitment includes using natural and renewable sources of energy such as wood, wind, micro-hydro, and solar. Through living and working with these systems, we are able to share with our visitors how sustainable energy can be possible within the scale of a small interdependent community.

Agriculture at the Farm

Healthy food means a healthy body, a healthy mind, and a healthy spirit.  Our vegetables, fruits, and herbs are all grown using organic and biodynamic processes and are used to nourish the NSF community and provide nutrition and education for events on the farm.

Geodesic Dome Greenhouse

Vegetables and herbs are grown year round in our geodesic dome greenhouse, utilizing mindful, organic and biodynamic practices. In additional to seasonal plantings, plants for the outdoor gardens are also started in this micro-environment. A unique feature of the geodesic dome is the 600 gallon water tank, which helps to regulate the temperature and humidity levels of this microclimate. The tank is also home to a variety of water plants, as well to naturally and organically fed tilapia, which provide nourishment to the people and plants.

Outdoor Gardens

There are several outdoor gardens and raised beds where vegetables, herbs, and flowers are grown using biodynamic and organic growing practices.

Fermentation is a process we are passionate about at New Spring Farm as this practice preserves the nutrients in food and creates beneficial enzymes, b-vitamins, Omega-3 fatty acids, and various strains of probiotics. We honor and offer gratitude to every plant grown here at New Spring Farm, from seed to storage and every stage in between. In addition to sauerkraut, kimchi, and pesto, to name a few, some plants grown and wild harvested from the generously healing Earth here at New Spring Farm are processed into medicine as well in the form of tinctures, oils and, energetic essences.

Fruits & Berries

There are several cultivated and wild apple trees that reside at New Spring Farm that are picked and eaten whole, made into pies and preserves, and pressed into delicious cider. There is also a beautiful patch of organically cultivated blueberries along with wild raspberries, blackberries, and elderberries that grow wild around the farm.

Our Pastures

Our pastures are consciously managed with organic and biodynamic farming practices, which ensures that no harmful chemicals or fertilizers are used. We use these pasture for grazing, as well as for hay. It’s an integral system that ensures the health of the Earth, our animals, and you.

We Love Our Animals

We take care of our animals with the same care, love, and respect that we extend to our family, friends, and quests.

Cows

Our small herd of Red Angus Herefords is an important part of the health of our surrounding pastures. By regularly rotating on their grazing pastures, we ensure that our cows are getting the freshest and most nutritious grass, which in turn makes them healthier and happier. Our cows live a great life!
